Use of archival documents


Use of archival documents is regulated by the Act of the National Council of the Slovak Republic No. 395/2002 Coll. on archives and registries and by the Directive No. 628/2002 Coll. of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic.

Archival documents can be consulted or studied on permission of the Director of the Archives, by any interested individual upon presentation of a valid identification document (identification card or passport). Permission for the consultation of archival documents cannot be granted if this consultation should cause any injure to state or social interests. Permission will also be denied in case of the request for archival documents less than thirty years old, records which have not been processed or those which are liable to damage or deterioration from consultation or study.

Archival documents containing personal data of deceased individuals can be the subject of communication to the public only under the condition that the legal rights of the living heirs are not harmed. Permission for consultation or study cannot be denied to creators' of the records, to state authorities, courts or public prosecution. The Act No 428/2002 Coll. on Personal Data Protection is applied to the documents containing these data.

Upon request from individuals or institutions, the Archives issues administrative information from archival documents in form of certificates or verified reprographic copies of archival documents. Administrative information is issued upon written request from individuals and institutions, and is charged according to tariffs specified in the supplement to the Act of Slovak National Council No 232/1999 Coll. on Administrative Charges in compliance with later regulations and by the Regulation of the Minister of the Interior of the SR no. 9 on archival search and administrative fees from January 31, 2003.

Archival documents kept in the archives can be used by several ways:
- directly in the search room of the archives by studying of finding aids, archival documents or their   reproductions
- indirectly on the basis of written request for a search, extract and copy
- via exhibitions, pedagogical activity and guided tours.

Archives is open to public from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
